How to Pack When Shipping

“Shipping is all about packing and the right packing saves a lot of money if your shipment gets lost or damaged.”

Packaging for shipping is as much about what you put inside as what you put on the outside.

Beyond just sealing up a box, it’s important to pay attention to how items are arranged and where they’re attaching from in order to reduce potential damage and make traveling transportation easier on both your items and the driver.

Here are some tips for how to make sure the items in your shipment get where they need to go:

Print a shipping label. Before you pack, make sure you have the packing slip and shipping label printed up and ready so that you can include them in your package. Include a copy of these documents along with the tracking information on your shipping receipt.

That way, you’ll be prepared if something does happen during transportation and you need to handle it over the phone as soon as possible.

Pack your box with the right materials. Use sturdy packing materials, like bubble wrap, to cushion your items inside the box. Before closing up the box, figure out how you’ll attach it, and then make sure your shipment is secure by taping down all flaps and fastening with a sturdy packing tape.

Finally, write “Fragile” on the sides of boxes that contain sensitive materials or electronics in order to alert delivery drivers to handle with care.

Put heavier items on top and lighter ones on bottom. If you have to send more than one box, make sure that more fragile items are in the bottom box, and less fragile ones are in the top.

When a delivery driver picks up a box from the truck, they’ll usually lift it from the bottom. So if your more fragile items are at the bottom of a stack of boxes, they may get damaged by heavier objects placed on top of them.

Put small items in separate packages. If you have several small items that need to be sent, consider putting them in separate packages.

This makes it easier for a delivery driver to sort items when they get to their destination and will also help protect small items from damage if something happens to one box.

Place all contents in the box. Make sure everything that’s supposed to go in the box is inside before you close it up. If you package an item separately and forget to place it in the box, your shipment may get delayed or damaged as a result.
